Amendment X: Rights of States Under the Constitution

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people."

This forgotten amendment should have ended any other addition to the Constitution. It was a finished document when it was willed to us, in no need of improvement. Our founders thought that anything else that may arise would be better left to the states, the communities and the people.

Over the years our government officials have managed to forget this little piece of our founding. They have perverted and interpreted our constitution to mean whatever they want it to. So much so that our founders would not recognize the nation they brought forth as the last great hope of the world.

This very issue was a major part of what led to the Civil War, States Right vs. National Supremacy. Sure we all know that one of the major issues was slavery, but it was far from the only one. Rural farmers didn't like being controlled by big cities whether they were from the north or the south, and they still don't today. This conundrum was not solved by the war, it still reigns heavy today.

Laws are like taxes they come from one group, but affects another. Like Ann Coulter said, "if you oppose the federal government taxing a waitress in Des Moines to subsidize the New York City Opera you must be some sort of Jesus freak." Just like if a person that has done the responsible thing and paid for their own health insurance opposes paying for someone that chose not to is a heartless racist. The progressive attitude is that they know better, and 535 tyrants in Washington should be able to tell the people of Montana, who has only three voices in that body, what they are to do.

If we would have left well enough alone and let the states decide their own fates we may not be in the mess we are in right now. Instead we have blackmailed them by taxing the people, taxes that would have better been implemented and used at the state level, out of their money and threatening to withhold its return if they do not kowtow to the federal government. Just like they withheld road funding back in the 1970's when they changed the national speed limit to 55mph or when they forced Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday on the state of Arizona by boycotts and funding or even more recently with the illegal alien laws being passed in the states, because the federal government is not doing their job. Like Alexis de Tocqueville said, "The American Republic will endure until the day congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money."

We would have been far better off if we would have abided in the 10th amendment. Then if you could not change something in the ballot box, you could go to a state that had or did not have the law. That was the way the founder intended it to be. In their America the people had a say in their governance, they did not have it dictated to them.
